Omi is keenly analytical and lives by a thoughtful calculus far beyond his years. Unlike Toranaga's son, Nagakado, his peer whose birthright all but guarantees him success, Omi must be more cautious and even more clever to secure his place in the world.&nbsp;Despite their differences, Omi feels a kinship with Nagakado, imagining them as the next generation of warlords shaping Japan.Omi has his heart set on the beautiful and renowned Kiku, Izu's most famous courtesan. He is infatuated with her, but unlike many of her customers, Omi sees behind her mystique to the ambitious young woman within.&nbsp;Kiku and Omi share a drive and appetite that propels them beyond the borders of Ajiro, though they are not sure where their paths will lead.No matter what fate has in store for Omi, he's ready.

It is not clear which historical figures James Clavell had in mind when he created the characters of Kashigi Yabushige and Omi. While the historical model for Blackthorne, William Adams, reached Bungo on Kyushu Island (present-day Oita Prefecture), Clavell changed the point of arrival to Izu, near Toranaga's territory. This change gave him many opportunities to develop the plot and the fictional characters of the Kashigis.
